Do You Have What It Takes?

Do You Have What It Takes?

A new campaign to educate men on safer sex strategies! This campaign follows up on some earlier work that was lead by AIDS Vancouver.

"Do You Have What It Takes? Surely, as Gay and Bisexual men, that’s a question we’ve asked ourselves more than a few times in our lives. Having what it takes isn’t just about measuring your sexual exploits, the size of your “tool” or having a rubber and lube handy. Having what it takes, is also a question that affects everyone of us in our ability to achieve self respect, to make the right choices, to stay alert and, above all, to stay the course with regards to the boundaries that you set for yourself to avoid or reduce the risks associated with HIV and other sexually transmitted infestions (STIs)." Do you have what it takes
The campaign has a quiz in which you answer some questions and after your done, (took me 2 minutes to answer 5 or 6 questions) and it provides some instant feedback, all of it anonymous!

Check it out... HERE!

CPP fails people living with HIV

Today thousands of survivors of HIV/AIDS on medical benefits/income support are doing much better. They would like to return to employment. They want to become full contributing citizens again, finding employment, performing a job or returning to a profession.

They are in this position largely due to huge advances in medical treatment, that has slowed the ravages of HIV, in many cases brought them back from the brink. Their immune systems are strong, viral loads are small or undetectable.

Many of these people on private insurance can return work. They have not needed to collect Canada Pension plan payments due to the good insurance they held. Those others, the vast majority have had to rely on welfare - income support programs to put a roof over their heads and to buy life's necessities like food, clothing, transportation, and over the counter medications not covered by provincial phama plans.

The provincial plans differ from province to province and in some cases city to city. Generally the value of these programs provide $300 to 5oo for housing, 200 to 300 for food, 100 for other things, like telephone, transportation, heat, lights etc. and maybe a nutritional allowance of 40 to 200 dollars. HIV meds and other medications are covered in full generally with the requirement for co-pay.

Once on this provincial plan you are required to apply for Canada Pension benefits. Anything received from CPP is then deducted from the provincial plan payment. Generally CPP payments come close to the total amount received on the provincial plan.

So after years of being on HIV meds, battling back to good health, you want to return to work, easy right? Its what we would like people to do if they can right?

The answer is right of course. So why are many apparently healthy HIV/AIDS folks remaining on the dole? Its the rules around CPP. If you collect it for a disability, and you return to work, you can't come back to it if your health makes it impossible to continue working. These people are in a catch 22. Once CPP is given up, its darn near impossible to get back.

What's the answer? It would seem all we need to do is change the rules around CPP. We could do that if you want to amend the constitution! That's not likely so we need a new plan. Many people in the HIV/AIDS support agencies are trying to find a solution to this problem, perhaps a new federal program? CPP isn't working for people with HIV/AIDS and its likely its not working for other people as well. We need a solution and a federal government willing to help make it happen.

more to come...

National Days of Action: Still Time to Deliver on HIV and AIDS

National Days of Action: Still Time to Deliver on HIV and AIDS

Greetings,

During its 2007 Annual General Meeting of the Canadian AIDS Society, a resolution was proposed by the people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHIV/AIDS) and unanimously endorsed by 125 National Member agencies. That resolution pertained to those agencies offering their support with regards to the process, initiated by the PLWHIV/AIDS, of campaigning for change in Canada’s response to the needs of people living with HIV/AIDS and raising awareness of the problems caused by the Federal Government’s stall (under review) in rolling out national funding allocated to the Federal Initiative addressing HIV/AIDS. All federal funding is set to expire March 30, 2008 and to date there has been no official indication as to what will happen as of April 1, 2008.

The first step in this campaign will be a blitz, by PLWHIV/AIDS and member agencies, to contact all Members of Parliament (MPs) and to arrange meetings with them to discuss issues related to PLWHIV/AIDS. The goal of this blitz is to show nation wide solidarity in approaching all MPs and creating a sense of urgency around pressing issues. It is hoped that MPs will then have a greater understanding of the struggles faced by those living with HIV/AIDS and be better equipped to discuss those issues in caucus and in the House.

For this initiative to have its greatest impact we call you to action. Any PLWHIV/AIDS affected or closely affected and other caring citizens are invited to join members of the Ottawa PLWHIV/AIDS community in calling, writing and participating in meetings with area MP’s.

An initial strategy meeting will be held in the Board Room at the AIDS Committee of Ottawa, 251 Bank St., Suite 700, 6-8 P.M. Thursday September 13/07. Additional background information will be available to attendees.

Please feel free to forward this urgent call to action to any members of your communities who you feel would want to be involved. This is directed to the residents of the Ottawa region, but if you live outside the area I encourage you to contact your local AIDS Agency to lend your support in your area. I apologize in advance to anyone who might have received multiple copies of this bulletin.

Thank you for your time and concern.
