The survey also found that the number of Canadians agreeing that gays and lesbians should be allowed to get married has increased. Currently, 57% agree, the highest level since the Centre for Research and Information on Canada (CRIC) first asked the question over two years ago, and up from 48% in September 2003.
The number disagreeing currently stands at 38%, down from 47% in September 2003. Again, age is the decisive factor shaping opinions on this issue. Seventy-seven percent of 18-29 year olds agree that gays and lesbians should be allowed to get married, compared with 37% of those over 60 – a difference of 40 points.
