Govt Website Lists Homosexuality as Mental Disorder

BC Government Website Lists HOMOSEXUALITY as a mental disorder along with TRANSVESTISM TRANS-SEXUALISM

Below is a partial list of disorders listed. This was discovered this evening. Major question at this time is why has the Gordon Campbell government not taken this down after it was discovered?

The second question is why didn't the government check what they are posting? It appears not to be that important by the government.

This incident adds to growing perceptual and real concerns the BC Liberal government is moving further to the right. Recent "moderate" Liberals have resigned, people like Lynn Stephens, Christie Clark, Gary Collins and Rev Val Anderson. Recent Liberal nomination battles see many anti choice, anti gay and social conservatives running.

Mary Polak, former Chair of the Surrey School Board that banned YouthCO, an internationally recognised leader in HIV/AIDS prevention programming from presenting in Surrey schools is one of those social conservatives running. Polak also lead the School board in spending over $1 million dollars trying to keep books on same-sex families out of the schools. The school board lost in the end.

Polak was the Liberal candidate in the Surrey Riding By-election last fall and was roundly trounced by the NDP candidate. She is now seeking the nomination in Langley. Public Eye ONline reported today that Polak was being supported by a membership drive that was conducted by the Campaign Life Coalition British Columbia.

An interesting sidebar to the Polak run for power is the support she received from Lorne Mayencourt, the gay Liberal MLA from one of Vancouver's gay constituencies. Mayencourt has earned the wrath of many gay community leaders for his support of the anti-gay Liberal. Ted Nebbling, the gay Liberal MLA from Whistler called Mayencourt a hypocrite for remaining in a Liberal government caucus where Polak was introduced to the MLA's by Gordon Campbell.

I will have more on the government website concern in the morning. This is a very serious mistake for the government to make at any time. It is is even more so now given the context of the current debate nationally on same-sex marriage.

Guess the government feel the same way about gays, that they feel about trans people.
Welcome to our nightmare.

I wrote to the Ministry of Health in BC today about it and mentioned both homosexuality and trans-sexualism (both on their list), however they appear to only be concerned with Homosexuality (especially since the
media got a hold of it). It would appear that the BC government still views trans-sexualism as a mental disorder. Very shameful.

I just tried reading the link, and it appears that the pdf document has been removed from its location.

Several questions come up from this story:
1. Exactly when was this list created? The first government to post it desrves the most blame, and if that be these Liberals, then I stand corrected.
2. Depending on that date, maybe some criticism should be directed towards the new, transformed, and suddenly defender of all human rights, the NDP. The list has been amended by this Liberal government, although they should go farther, and remove transvestism and trans-sexualism.
3. Lorne Mayencourt was voted in by a majority of a largely gay costituencey; opponents have still not conceded defeat. Where is the criticism of Ted Nebbling for his continuing support of this government? (if one shares the view this is an all out bad government for our communty)

Re: 3 questions.

If the NDP were in power I would be asking them to take action. The Liberal government does not seem to have any "queer lense" when it looks at government programs, policy or legislation.

Case in point was during the last session when they changed the act with respect to burials. They removed same gender couples from the definition. I am not saying they did it to "harm" or remove rights, they simply did not have anyone look at this before they introduced the bill. And when it was pointed out, instead of making an amendment they fought the suggestion.

Lorne Mayencourt has a lot to answer for and I will be writing more on his disappointing and in someways "harmful representation" of the queer communities. He has failed to represent the queer communities in face of a number of government actions and in his unabashed and very public support for BC's Number one homophobe, Mary Polak.

To be fair, Ted Nebbling has not done that much either. Nebbling has never touted himself as the champion of queer issues that Mayencourt has. He was removed from cabinet likely due to the fact he had recently married his same-sex partner. I suspect the removal was in part due to internal homophobia and the possible negative image it would provide social conservatives the party is wooing.

Nebbling's rebuke of Mayencourt for his support of Polak helped redeem his stature in my opinion. One for Ted!

You will see my full report on Mayencourt soon.

Apparently, they had still listed "involvement with the occult" as a mental dis-order also (I guess that makes everybody who reads the sun-sign astrology columns in the paper crazy). They've taken down all references to diagnostic codes on their site now it seems...

Yes they have removed the list from the site. Now they are conducting a large research effort to see if any Doctors received payment for "treating" Gays as a mental disorder.

There will be "hell" to pay if it happened.

This is an email that was generated by my posting from an elist I am on. It says it very well

I have been following the email path of discussions relating to those of us that deal with transsexualism.

For a doctor to say that transsexualism is a mental disorder is a load of BS. I was informed several years ago that doctors knew that I was gender dysphoric as early as the age of four.

Long before I learned that, I had found out for myself that I had a serious problem with the physical body which did not match my mental and emotional identity. Because of the risks inherent in obtaining a sex change in the early '80s, I spent several years thinking the matter over before deciding to
proceed.

I see myself internally and emotionally as a woman trapped in the wrong body. This leads to levels of stress that most people cannot even begin to comprehend. Many of us are forced to live double lives until people begin to realize that we are very serious about changing our physical body to match our inner image and embrace the woman or man within.

I myself have been forced to live a double life many times. I have
also been in jail, where they allowed me to receive HRT but denied me the choice of living female. I had to watch my back all the time because some of the men on the various ranges had ideas about molesting me simply because I had breast development. This caused a great deal of stress
and emotional agony.

Since I was released from jail in September of 2000, I have spent 2 1/2 years in the women's shelter system, five months on the street and 15 1/2 months living in rooming houses. In December of 2002, I was transferred to the Scarborough Hope shelter where I was denied the right to live in my chosen role even though the Hostel Standards Act states that a trans individual must be sent to a shelter that allows their chosen
lifestyle. While I was on the street, I was unable to live as a female because of the weather, a lack both of privacy and finances.

This continued in the rooming house and my present apartment because of financial problems. I am in the process of reaffirming myself, yet many things prevent me from being the person that I feel I should be.

Over the years, I have had many problems with people who refused to accept that even though I was changing my lifestyle to fit my inner image, I was adamant about it and would not stop just because someone said that I was never going to make it as a woman.

Whether I succeed or not is not as important to me as whether I try to the best of my ability to be
the person that is the inner me.

Be yourself. Do not let others stop you fom doing or getting what you want in your chosen lifestyle.

Thanks for all the interesting emails about transsexualism. I have really enjoyed reading them.

Another email on the subject!

Well I guess someone at the government is cleaning house cause when I clicked on the link I got a page saying File not Found.

And when I did a search of the site using "mental disorders homosexuality", it found matches but again said File not Found when I clicked on them.

Good work.
